Emergencies in Orthodontics

In emergency situations where you cannot see your orthodontist , you may need to handle some orthodontic problems yourself. The following section offers suggestions on how to deal with some of these problems.

  • Toothache after getting your braces
  • Irritation on lips and cheeks
  • Rubber ligatures coming off the brackets when eating sticky foods
  • Brackets breaking while exercising or eating a hard meal
  • Extending wire

Some of the other orthodontic emergencies and precautions include:

  • Storage of removable appliances and plates
  • Removing the removable appliance or protective plate while eating
  • Removing the headgear

Toothache after your braces are fitted; One of the most common problems after your braces are fitted is toothache in the first few days. This makes it even more difficult for you to eat. You can get through this process more easily with soft and liquid foods. You can take a painkiller that is good for you, just like you would when you have a headache.

Preventing Irritation When Wearing Braces

During orthodontic treatment, lips and cheeks may become irritated in the first days when braces are worn. Irritation on the inside of the lips and cheeks where your braces touch is one of the problems that may occur in the first days. The wax we give you after orthodontic treatment will help you get through the first days.

To apply wax to your brackets, tear off a small piece of your wax and roll it well to make it soft. Place the wax that we have softened on the bracket or band that irritates our lips and cheeks and stick it. After sticking the wax, make sure it fits around the bracket. Your wax may fall out, come out, or even be swallowed while eating. Since it does not cause any harm, it is not a situation that you should worry about.

Removal of Rubber Ligatures from Brackets

We may encounter problems such as rubber ligatures coming off the brackets when eating sticky foods. Small rubber ligatures are used to hold your braces on your brackets. These ligature rubbers can partially or completely come off due to sticky foods. You can reattach the loose ligature rubbers to the brackets they came off from using tweezers or a similar tool.

Brackets Breaking

The brackets you use are attached to the middle of your teeth with a special adhesive. Your bracket may come loose when you do sports or eat a hard meal. This is usually noticed when you brush your teeth or when the bracket is not in the middle of your teeth. When you notice that your bracket is not in the middle of your teeth, you must see your orthodontist to fix this problem. Sometimes a broken bracket rotates on the wire and can dig into your lip and cheek. You can rotate your bracket back on the wire with a tool like tweezers to prevent it from digging into your cheek and lip. You can stick wax to that area.

Care of Extended Braces

If your wire has come out of the last bracket or band, if your wire has come out of the brackets and is irritating your lips and cheeks; you can get rid of this problem yourself at home with a clean nail clipper without needing an orthodontist. You can cut the extended wire with the nail clipper that we are sure is clean. Placing a clean tissue between the bracket and your cheek while cutting the wire with the nail clipper will help you to easily remove the broken wire.
